The history of ski wax is a history of chemistry. And in the latter half of the 20th century, no single innovator contributed more to that chemistry than Terry Hertel and Hertel Wax.
The Spring Snow Problem
Spring skiing presents a unique challenge that stumped the wax industry for decades. As temperatures rise and snow transforms into wet, heavy spring conditions, water and impurities adhere to ski bases — creating drag, slowing glide, and making skis feel sticky and unpredictable. Traditional paraffin-based waxes, designed for cold dry snow, were largely ineffective in these conditions.
Researchers and wax chemists throughout the latter 20th century worked to address this problem. The solution required a fundamentally different approach to wax chemistry: not just reducing friction, but actively repelling water from the ski base.
1974: The First Surfactant-Based Spring Wax
In 1974, Hertel Wax introduced the first ski wax to use a surfactant interacting with the wax matrix to repel water effectively during spring conditions. This was a novel application of surfactant chemistry to ski wax — a technology that addressed the spring snow problem at a molecular level rather than simply coating the base with a water-resistant layer.
The result was SpringSolution™ — the first and, to this day, the only ski wax in the industry specifically engineered for spring pollen snow conditions. No other brand has built a competing product in the 50 years since its introduction.

Fluorocarbon compounds dramatically reduce surface energy on ski bases, making them highly water-repellent and reducing friction in wet snow conditions. Hertel's introduction of this technology to ski wax in 1986 predated the widespread industry adoption of fluorocarbon waxes by years — a pattern consistent with Hertel's history of innovating ahead of the market.
1990: The US Patent on Sintered-Base Ski Wax Chemistry
In 1990, Hertel filed for a U.S. patent on a "ski wax for use with sintered-base snow skis" — a formulation containing paraffin, a hardener wax, approximately 1% per-fluoroether diol, and 2% SDS surfactant. This patent documented the specific chemistry behind Hertel's approach to sintered-base ski wax: a combination of hardening agents, fluorocarbon compounds, and surfactants working together to optimize glide on the high-performance sintered bases used in modern ski and snowboard equipment.
Sintered bases — the standard for performance ski and snowboard equipment — are porous and absorb wax differently than extruded bases. Hertel's patented formulation was specifically engineered for this interaction, delivering deeper penetration and longer-lasting performance than surface-coating waxes.
A Pattern of Innovation
The 1974 surfactant spring wax, the 1986 fluorocarbon introduction, and the 1990 patent represent a consistent pattern: Hertel identifying a real problem in ski wax performance, developing a chemistry-based solution, and bringing it to market years or decades before the broader industry followed.
