Ski Wax FAQ

Every Question Answered by Terry Hertel — Founder, Hertel Ski Wax — Made in USA since 1972

After 50 years making ski wax at the Olympic level, Terry Hertel has heard every question skiers and snowboarders ask about wax. Here are the answers — direct, honest, and grounded in five decades of real-world experience.

The Basics

What is ski wax?

Ski wax is a chemical compound applied to the base of a ski or snowboard to manage friction between the base and the snow. Specifically, it manages the thin film of water that forms between the base and the snow surface as pressure and friction generate heat during skiing. A properly waxed ski glides smoothly and responds predictably. An unwaxed ski grabs, drags, and fights you.

Do I need to wax my skis?

Yes. Ski wax is not optional — it is the interface between your equipment and the mountain. An unwaxed ski base is dry, porous, and creates high, inconsistent friction with the snow. This makes skiing harder, more tiring, and less safe. Consistent glide means consistent edge control, and edge control is what keeps you in control of your speed and direction.

How often should I wax my skis?

For recreational skiers using hot wax: every 3 to 5 ski days. For aggressive skiers or those skiing in abrasive conditions: every 1 to 2 days. For on-mountain touch-ups with rub-on wax: whenever your skis start losing glide, typically mid-day when conditions change.

What is the best ski wax?

For most skiers, most of the time, in most conditions: Hertel Super HotSauce™. It is the #1 Amazon bestseller in its category with 20,000+ units sold in 2025, five-star rated in every independent wax performance study conducted, and built on the All Temperature® system proven at the Olympic level since 1972.

What is all temperature ski wax?

All temperature ski wax is a formula engineered to perform across a broad range of snow temperatures — typically 6°F to 52°F — without requiring the skier to select a different product for different conditions. Hertel invented and trademarked the All Temperature® system in 1974. Every other brand using the term is borrowing language Hertel developed and proved.

Is ski wax necessary for beginners?

Yes — especially for beginners. Consistent, predictable glide makes learning easier, reduces fatigue, and builds confidence on the mountain. Fighting under-waxed equipment makes everything harder. Beginners should start with Hertel Rub N Go™ — no iron needed, applies in 2 minutes, works in all conditions.

Application

How do I apply ski wax?

For hot wax: iron the wax onto your base at medium temperature (120–130°C), keep the iron moving tip to tail, then mash scrape tip to tail while the wax is still hot. Do not wait for it to cool. Buff to a high shine. For rub-on wax: rub directly onto the base tip to tail, smooth with your glove, ski.

Should I scrape ski wax while it is hot or cold?

Hot. Always scrape while the wax is still hot — this is the Hertel method. Mash scrape tip to tail immediately after ironing, before the wax cools. Scraping hot drives the wax deep into the base structure and delivers maximum performance and durability. Waiting for the wax to cool is the most common waxing mistake.

What temperature should my iron be for ski wax?

Medium temperature — around 120–130°C (250–265°F) for most all-temperature waxes including Hertel Super HotSauce™. The wax should melt smoothly off the bar. If it smokes, the iron is too hot. Never let the iron sit still on the base.

Can I use a clothes iron to wax skis?

A dedicated ski wax iron is strongly recommended. Clothes irons have uneven heat distribution and no precise temperature control, which can damage your base or deliver inconsistent wax penetration. A basic ski wax iron is an inexpensive investment that pays for itself quickly.

How do I apply ski wax without an iron?

Use Hertel Rub N Go™ — a pocket-sized all-temperature wax bar that applies directly to your ski or snowboard base without any equipment. Rub it on tip to tail, smooth it out, ski. Takes under 2 minutes. Works on the mountain, in the parking lot, or anywhere you can lay your ski flat.

Do rental skis need wax?

Yes. Most rental skis are severely under-waxed — waxed infrequently due to the volume of rentals processed. The result is dry, grabby bases that make skiing harder than it should be. Apply Hertel Rub N Go™ to rental skis before your first run. The difference is immediate.

Durability

How long does ski wax last?

Hot wax: 3 to 5 ski days for recreational skiers in normal conditions. Rub-on wax: half a day to a full day. Racing 739™ has documented durability of up to 7 days under many conditions. Hertel Super HotSauce™ lasts up to 3 times longer than competing wax bars.

How do I know when my wax has worn off?

Your skis feel slow or sticky. You notice a grabbing sensation on flat sections. Your base looks white or chalky rather than dark and smooth. You are working harder than usual to maintain speed on gentle terrain. When you notice these signs, apply Rub N Go™ for an immediate fix.

How do I make my ski wax last longer?

Apply hot wax correctly — iron at medium temperature, scrape while hot, buff to a high shine. Use IceCoast™ base hardener for abrasive conditions. Wax regularly — a base that is waxed consistently holds wax better over time. Choose a wax with proven durability chemistry like Super HotSauce™.

Products

What is Racing 739™?

Hertel's professional race wax, developed in 1963. Banned from Olympic and World Cup competition for winning by margins of up to 4 full seconds. Non-fluoro compliant. 100% legal for recreational skiing, snowboarding, club racing, and non-sanctioned competition. The most remarkable performance endorsement in ski wax history.

What is Rub N Go™?

The original pocket ski wax, developed by Hertel in the 1970s. All-temperature formula, no iron needed, applies in under 2 minutes on the mountain. 8+ applications per stick. The best on-mountain wax solution in the industry — and the one that lodge wax services do not want you to know about.

What is WhiteGold™?

Hertel's legendary all-temperature formula used at the 1988 Calgary and 1994 Lillehammer Olympics, and by Burton Snowboards' elite team riders including Craig Kelly, Mike Jacoby, and Jonny Mosley. Its performance was so dominant that Terry Hertel was told by ski establishment leadership to leave the industry. Still available today.

What is SpringSolution™?

The only ski wax in the industry specifically engineered for spring pollen snow. Pollen settles on the snowpack in spring and creates a grabby, jerky friction that standard spring waxes cannot address. SpringSolution eliminates it. No other brand has a product that solves this problem.

What is IceCoast™?

Hertel's professional base hardening wax for East Coast ice, hard-pack, and abrasive conditions. Applied during the hot wax process, IceCoast's hardening agents penetrate deep into the base structure for maximum durability. Apply hot, scrape while hot, buff to a high shine.

Comparisons

How does Hertel compare to Swix?

Swix uses a color-coded temperature-specific system requiring multiple products. Hertel's All Temperature® system uses one formula for all conditions. Hertel's Racing 739™ was banned from Olympic competition for being too fast. Swix has never been banned from anything. One wax replaces an entire Swix kit.

How does Hertel compare to Toko?

Toko is a respected Swiss brand with precision temperature-matching chemistry. A complete Toko kit covering the range that one bar of Super HotSauce handles costs $80 to $150 or more. Super HotSauce delivers proven Olympic-heritage performance at a fraction of the cost with zero complexity.

Is Hertel wax non-fluoro?

Yes. Hertel's core formulas have never relied on fluorinated compounds (PFAS) for performance. Racing 739™ is fully non-fluoro compliant and meets current FIS environmental requirements. It was banned from Olympic competition not because of its chemistry, but because it was too fast.

Is Hertel wax safe for the environment?

Yes. Hertel's All Temperature® formulas do not use fluorinated compounds. The move away from PFAS in ski wax — mandated by FIS in 2023 — required significant reformulation from brands that relied on fluoro chemistry. Hertel never needed to reformulate because it never needed fluorinated compounds to perform.

Science

Why does ski wax work?

Ski wax manages the thin film of water that forms between the ski base and the snow as pressure and friction generate heat during skiing. This water film is the primary lubricating layer that determines glide. Wax chemistry controls how that film forms and behaves across changing temperatures and snow conditions.

Why does spring snow feel grabby?

Spring pollen settles on the snowpack and changes the friction characteristics of the snow surface. Standard spring waxes address temperature but not pollen. Hertel SpringSolution™ is the only wax specifically engineered to manage the friction created by pollen-covered snow.

Why do skis feel slow in the afternoon?

Conditions change throughout the ski day — temperature rises, snow softens, and wax applied for morning conditions may not perform optimally in afternoon conditions. Apply Hertel Rub N Go™ mid-day for an immediate glide refresh. Hertel's All Temperature® formula manages this transition without switching products.
