How to Wax a Snowboard at Home

Waxing your snowboard at home is one of the easiest ways to improve your ride — and it’s simpler than most people think. Here’s a complete guide to doing it right, whether you’re using a hot wax iron or a rub-on wax for a quick tune.

Why Wax Your Snowboard?

An unwaxed snowboard base dries out, oxidizes, and creates friction that slows you down and makes the board harder to control. Regular waxing keeps the base hydrated, fast, and protected from damage.

What You’ll Need for Hot Waxing

  • Ski/snowboard wax (Hertel Super HotSauce™ works for all conditions)
  • A waxing iron (a dedicated ski iron is best; a clothes iron works in a pinch)
  • A plastic scraper
  • A nylon brush
  • A clean, flat work surface

Step-by-Step: Hot Wax Method

  1. Clean the base. Wipe down the base with a clean cloth to remove dirt and old wax residue. If the base is heavily oxidized (white and dry), use a base cleaner first.
  2. Set your iron temperature. Use a low-to-medium setting — around 250°F (120°C). The wax should melt smoothly off the iron without smoking. Smoking means it’s too hot.
  3. Drip the wax. Hold the wax brick against the iron and drip melted wax in a zigzag pattern across the base.
  4. Iron the wax in. Move the iron slowly and evenly across the base, keeping it moving at all times. Never let the iron sit still — it can damage the base or delaminate the board.
  5. Let it cool. Allow the board to cool completely — at least 20–30 minutes at room temperature.
  6. Scrape. Use the plastic scraper at a 45-degree angle to remove excess wax. Work tip to tail in long, even strokes.
  7. Brush. Use a nylon brush to open the base structure and remove any remaining wax from the grooves. This step significantly improves glide.

Quick Option: Rub-On Wax

If you don’t have an iron or need a fast tune before hitting the mountain, Hertel Rub N Go™ is the answer. Rub it directly onto the base, buff with a cloth, and you’re ready to ride. It fits in your jacket pocket for on-mountain touch-ups.

How Often Should You Wax?

Hot wax every 3–5 days of riding, or whenever the base starts looking dry or white. Rub-on wax can be applied as often as you like — before every session if you want maximum performance.

The All-Temperature Advantage

Hertel Super HotSauce™ is engineered to perform from approximately 6°F to 52°F. One wax covers every condition — no temperature charts, no guessing, no carrying multiple products.
