Spring Skiing Wax Guide: How to Wax for Wet, Slushy Snow

Spring skiing is one of the great joys of the season — warm sunshine, soft snow, and long days on the mountain. But spring snow is also the most demanding on your ski base. Without the right wax, wet and slushy conditions turn into a slow, sticky nightmare. Here's everything you need to know to keep your skis gliding fast all spring long. For a full overview of wax types and conditions, see our complete ski wax guide.

Why Spring Snow is Different

As temperatures rise above freezing, snow crystals melt and refreeze in a cycle that creates heavy, wet, water-saturated snow. This type of snow has very different friction characteristics than cold, dry powder:

  • Higher water content creates suction between the ski base and snow
  • Wet snow is more abrasive and wears wax faster
  • Without proper wax, skis feel slow, sticky, and hard to turn
  • The wrong wax — especially a cold-temperature formula — can actually make things worse

The solution is a wax specifically formulated to repel water and reduce suction in warm, wet conditions.

Hertel SpringSolution: Built for Spring Snow

Hertel SpringSolution is our dedicated warm-weather and spring snow formula. It's engineered to:

  • Repel water and prevent suction buildup under the ski
  • Maintain glide in temperatures at and above freezing
  • Perform in heavy, slushy, and corn snow conditions
  • Last through a full day of spring skiing

SpringSolution is available in both iron-on (5oz/141g) and Rub N Go pocket size — so you can apply a fresh coat right on the chairlift if needed. Not sure whether to use iron-on or rub-on? Read our Rub-On vs. Iron-On comparison.

How to Wax for Spring Conditions

The night before your ski day:

  1. Clean your base thoroughly with Hertel Base Clean — spring snow carries more dirt and debris that contaminates your base
  2. Apply SpringSolution with a wax iron at the recommended temperature
  3. Let it cool completely — at least 30 minutes, ideally overnight
  4. Scrape firmly with a plastic scraper to remove excess
  5. Brush well with a nylon brush to open the base structure

On the mountain:

  • Carry a SpringSolution Rub N Go in your jacket pocket
  • If your skis start feeling slow mid-day (usually as temperatures peak in early afternoon), apply a quick rub-on coat and buff with your glove
  • This takes less than 60 seconds and restores glide immediately

Spring Waxing Tips from Terry Hertel

  • Wax the night before, not the morning of — wax needs time to fully bond with the base. Rushing it reduces performance.
  • Don't use cold-temp wax in spring — hard waxes designed for cold snow become sticky in warm conditions and attract dirt.
  • Pay attention to the time of day — spring snow is fastest in the morning when it's still firm, and slowest in early afternoon when it's most saturated. Plan your runs accordingly.
  • Clean your bases at the end of the season — spring snow is dirty. A thorough base clean and storage wax before summer keeps your skis in top shape for next season.
