The Story Behind WhiteGold™

WhiteGold™ was Hertel's breakthrough all-temperature formula for skis and snowboards — the product that put Hertel on the map at the highest levels of competitive winter sports. When Burton Snowboards' top riders started winning on WhiteGold™, the results were impossible to ignore.

According to Terry Hertel, the success of WhiteGold™ at the Olympic and World Cup level was so significant that he was bluntly told by ski establishment leadership to "get the fuck out of the industry." That is what happens when an independent American company outperforms the establishment on its own turf.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is WhiteGold™ and what makes it historically significant?

WhiteGold™ is Hertel's legendary all-temperature ski and snowboard wax — the formula used at the 1988 Calgary and 1994 Lillehammer Olympics and by Burton Snowboards' elite team riders including Craig Kelly, Mike Jacoby, and Jonny Mosley. Its performance was so dominant that it drew the attention — and resistance — of the ski establishment. The full story is told in the free WAXFAX book.

How does WhiteGold™ differ from Super HotSauce™?

Both WhiteGold™ and Super HotSauce™ use Hertel's All Temperature® formula. WhiteGold™ is the original formula with deep Olympic and competitive heritage — the product that established Hertel's reputation at the highest levels of the sport. Super HotSauce™ is Hertel's current flagship all-temperature formula, refined over 50+ years and now the #1 Amazon bestseller in its category.

What temperature range does WhiteGold™ work in?

WhiteGold™ uses Hertel's All Temperature® formula, performing from approximately 6°F to 52°F (-14°C to 11°C).

How do I apply WhiteGold™?

Iron WhiteGold™ onto your base at medium temperature (around 120–130°C). Keep the iron moving tip to tail — never let it sit still. Once applied, mash scrape tip to tail while the wax is still hot, then buff to a high shine. Do not wait for it to cool before scraping.

Was WhiteGold™ really used at the Olympics?

Yes. WhiteGold™ was used at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, contributing to gold medal performances. It was also used by Burton Snowboards' top professional riders throughout the late 1980s and 1990s at the World Cup level.

Why did the ski establishment push back against WhiteGold™?

According to Terry Hertel, the success of WhiteGold™ at the Olympic and World Cup level was so significant that it threatened established industry players who had long controlled race wax supply chains and technician relationships. The full account of this industry pushback is documented in the free WAXFAX book.

Can I use WhiteGold™ on a snowboard?

Yes. WhiteGold™ was used extensively on Burton Snowboards by elite riders and is safe for all standard sintered and extruded ski and snowboard base materials.

Is WhiteGold™ made in the USA?
